Dustin “Burgie” Burgemeister
I was born and raised right here in Redwood Falls, MN. I grew up playing many sports but found my niche in football, basketball, bowling, and golf. Yes, I said bowling. Actually, I was 3-time MVP of my conference. Despite my great success in high school sports, I was forced to face testicular cancer twice. Once, my junior year of high school and most recently October 2013.
I am proud to say that I am a two time cancer survivor. Boom!
My cancer journey taught me to not take things for granted and also to take care of my own body. LiveStrong!
After high school I was lucky enough to take my talents to St. Olaf to play football and study exercise science. Also during my time at St. Olaf, I was able to do research on the “Validity of the Vertical Jump” with the help of the TRiO McNair Scholars Program. Intrigued, I started focusing my attention to graduate school. After graduating St. Olaf in 2009, I received my degree in Exercise Science with a Biomedical Studies concentration then continued my education at The College of St. Scholastica for my Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology. During my time at St. Scholastica I was able to focus on just exercise and how the body responds to this physical demands such as VO2 testing, hot, cold, and lactic acid build-up within the body. During this time, we studied ourselves, a pretty interesting way to learn about one’s own body and how it can be pushed to the limits.
After graduating school I got my first job helping people in an injury prevention program. I was able to look at body mechanics during the work day and how to improve individual’s overall function, give basic nutrition counseling, and develop basic exercise programs. During my time at this job, I was excited to hear that Trevor was doing very well and thinking of expanding Functional Fitness. I was thrilled to hear that I was the man for this job. Coming home and getting to work with Functional Fitness equals awesomeness.
Overall, my passion lies in helping individuals become healthier, both mentally and physically. I am so glad to be a part of this company and can’t wait to see what other awesomeness we can offer this community in the future.
