We started training at Functional Fitness in August of 2014 after a friend recommended that we sign up for a 6 week challenge. Our motivation was two-fold – we had been trying to lose some weight for quite a while with no success, and had been hearing a lot of research that emphasized the importance of strength training, but didn’t know where to start. We were able to reach our goals with the challenge and after 6 weeks of training with the Functional Fitness Staff, we felt so good that we didn’t want to stop! Training together as a couple has had so many great benefts. We both feel great as a result of working out, both try to eat healthy food, and we’re accountable to each other to get to the gym. We feel fortunate that Functional Fitness is here in Redwood Falls and that we can continue to work on achieving our goals as a result of the great Functional Fitness Staff!
Three words have become ingrained in our minds since joining Functional Fitness:
Commitment, Challenge, and Accountability.
Lori joined back in July of 2011. After listening to Lori’s enthusiasm as well seeing her results after only 6 months at FF, Owen joined the following February of 2012. We had been members of a “come on your own time” gym, but just weren’t going on a regular basis. Making the decision to workout together, and with Functional Fitness’s commitment to teaching healthy living and exercise made it easier for us it to stick with a regular workout schedule.
We feel without a doubt it’s more rewarding to work out together, as well as take on these challenges on as a couple; we love each other, support each other, know each other, and want the other to succeed. It has not been easy by any means and there have been set backs. But we love a challenge, and at FF they love to challenge us.
We have challenged each other at times to come up with new recipes for bulk cooking on the weekends.
There are times that we get in a rut and just don’t feel like working out. We have had health issues that has limited or suspended our workouts. It’s important to have the support of your spouse as a partner. We keep each other in the loop when one is gone, and help keep each others spirits up. It also helps stay accountable when you have your spouse remind you to get signed up for class, and not to skip a class.
I have a confession to make…
I have been burning candles lately. Yes I know, very manly of me. Think what you want but I really enjoy it and I love the smell. Our sense of smell is such a powerful and simple tool that gets used so rarely we forget about it.
The scent of something can bring back vivid memories of time or completely turn a day around. Essential oils can improve mood and motivation because of the direct connection between scent and the brain.
With our seminar on Essential Oils tomorrow (WEDNESDAY 12/16), I wanted to share with you 5 ways I am going to start incorporating essential oils into my life. I am an essential oil newbie so I am still learning a lot.

I am not all about the miracle cures I see around the Internet, so here are the five practical ways I see essential oils making an impact on my life.
1. Diffuse them in the air to make my life better
There is a reason essential oils are commonly used in mindfulness and relaxation practices like meditation and massage. They directly affect our brain.
Essential oils can be diffused into the air to give numerous effects AND make your house smell like a palace. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel here, so if you want to learn more about diffusing check out the resource below.
2. Jazz up my beverages
I am a big proponent of lemon water in the morning. Lemon has a detoxifying effect; it also helps to make the body more alkaline (same thing vegetables do), and just flat out makes water taste better.
I find cutting a lemon and squeezing the juice to be a pain, so I don’t do it very often.
Now, its just two drops of the essential oil from lemon and I have lemon water. It’s not quite the same as the squeezed juice but for me the convenience and health factor trumps everything else. I think this is just the beginning of finding new and healthy ways to flavor water and other foods with essential oils.
3. Keep my air clean
Clean air in our homes, especially in the winter when our houses are on lockdown, is a key component to staying healthy this winter. Stale air is a breeding ground for all things airborne. This is one of the reasons we run a fan or air purifier in our bedroom every night. We spend a third of our lives in one room, you bet your last dollar I am going to do everything I can to optimize that room.
Optimizing sleep is a game changer!
The air isn’t as clean as we think it is and having a purifier running helps to get the crud out of the air.
Little did I know you can combine essential oils with water to create a spray that helps to purify the air.
Some essential oils have anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-biotic properties. These oils can be sprayed into the air to not only freshen your home but also keep you healthier.

4. Replace toxic chemicals in my home
Our world is filled with environmental toxins – you already know this. The vast majority of toxins and chemicals we come in contact with on a daily basis are man-made. Unfortunately, we don’t always know we are putting these disruptors in and on our bodies as well as cleaning our homes with them.
Many of the things we put on and in our bodies like lotions, face wash, shampoo, toothpaste, and make-up can contain many different kinds of chemicals that can affect our hormonal systems. We call them endocrine disruptors.
A good book on this is “Death by Rubber Duck.” The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is another good place to start learning about environmental toxins and endocrine receptors. The EWG also has a really nice guide to products we use on the daily basis and grades them.
Little did I know that essential oils can be a safe alternative to chemical-laden mainstream products.
If you haven’t checked out the article above do that because they give some recipes on how to make cleaning supplies using essential oils. You might find yourself saving a chunk of change as well when you create your own.
I am going to continue to investigate ways to incorporate oils into how we clean our home and even the gym.
5. Improve my sleep
I love my sleep. This is something I am constantly thinking about how to optimize and I know many of our clients struggle with sleep. We spend a third of our life sleeping, this is definitely something we need to think more about.
Based on some things I have read, I am going to start playing with diffusing different oils into the air while I sleep. I have heard great things from people using oils like lavender, which is touted to promote relaxation.
